TristenPJE sent me a PM about raising a child as an atheist and asked some good questions. This is my response...

Not so unheard of. An example: as a kid, I had a friend whose parents were atheists and rationalists, but about half of our friends were Christians... And no doubt it was the effect of these Christians' children (who obviously got their beliefs from their families, plus the reaffirmation of prayers and church at school etc), that she started to believe, and later had other supernatural beliefs.

I never talked about my doubts about God's existence as a child either. I knew all my relatives believed (at least "officially") in God, so I thought I would disappoint them or they would think I'm stupid or something, if I asked the questions.

I was forced out of public schools (partially) because I was an atheist... the bastards drove me insane

I like your attitude for things. If you tell them WHY they shouldn't do something, they can learn far more about the world...

My mother always said "do as I say, not as I do." This only gave me the need to question authority and I never accepted anything anyone said unless it was justified (kinda why I love math so much, so clear, black and white). I would say I got more out of interactions with other people than actually listening to what my parents said. I guess my capability to question authority stems from the way my parents raised me so they must've not done all that bad. Thanks Heathen for this great vid!

to clarify for everyone, she is my step-daughter, when her grandparents indoctrinated her, she came home crying for 3 days because her mother and I were "going to hell"...she has since questioned many parts of the Bible that she thinks are (I quote her) "retarded"...but dares NOT to say anything to them as to not "disappoint" them.
