Description:

I've updated my translation and recording on this one. Sure is a pretty song. Ligia / Lydia Tom Jobim English lyrics by Paul Sonnenberg I never have dreamt about you I'm not much of a dreamer Don't like movies or sambas, Never seen Ipanema Never lie in the sun Never walk in the rain When I called you that day and hung up It was just a wrong number, What was there to say? Did I find a piano And play foolish love songs For the rest of the day? No, Lydia... Lydia... I never have dreamt of you here On my lonely veranda Or while drinking a beer At the Copacabana Or walking the beach After midnight alone. When I knew you And first fell in love I said "It's an illusion" And I walked away And I wrote one more song then About foolish love and It's cruel lying ways Oh, Lydia... Lydia... If you'd held me Just once in your arms I know i'd have surrendered Myself without fail If I'd had but the courage To meet for a moment Your dark eyes that day... Oh, Lydia... Lydia...

Gotcha! I'll try to work that one in. Let me know what other 'pearls' this 'swine' has missed (my characterizaton, not yours!) Paul

The expression "olhos morenos" (something like brunette eyes)is cherished because it's a expression nobody uses, people would rather say "olhos castanhos" (brown eyes). Even though, this simple expression can represent a much wider way of picturing this woman, Lígia. This song is full of hidden Jobim's pearls.

Hi,everything he says he means the opposite. He's being ironic. Like when he says "I don't like neither rain or sun", what he's saying is absurd. It seems like he's done everything he says he didn't, like being in love with her. Therefore the sunbeam image means the opposite, as you say, a sunbeam wouldn't scare anyone, it's a poetical resource.

Mr. K, If you would be willing to tell me the 'story' of the song (a 'prose' translation) from your view, that would help me improve my version. Frankly, the bit about a terrifying sunbeam makes no sense to me whatsoever in English. Can you tell me why, for you, that is a cherished image? You can also reply via a YouTube email/message. Thanks! Paul

Good work! Do you think it would be possible to include one of the most interesting parts of this song, that sounds very interesting for us Brazilians: "but your brunette eyes terrify me more than a sunbean", and also "I forgot at the piano the lies of love I was going to say", "I've made a samba with those love silly things I've learnt with you", of course you would know how to put it in the right way...

Ah, "Ligia" is such a wonderful piece! And you do it with grace, as usual. Your voice is so perfect for bossa, i'm jealous! ;-)

Paul, your English lyrics to these Jobim songs are awesome. I should give you some of the alternate lyrics to this song -- if you already don't have them. Great job again!
