Description:

The propane-tank "Hang Drum" ("Hank-Drum") is a recent invention of mine & the results of lots of experimentation. The bungee cord reduces the tank's ample ring. This video is just to document the steps in my experimentation & like my other videos, is not intended to be slick entertainment. As in my 2 previous "Hang-esque" videos, the scale here is a favorite - D minor pentatonic (low to high): Low D (ding); A; C; D; F; G; A; C The thing is setup just like a Swiss Hang-Drum but the Low D note (ding) is not central, but is positioned between the two highest notes (the only way I could get it to work). Nonetheless, it's as easy to hit as if it were a central ding. Building information & a to-scale template can be found on my webpage at: http://www.ehhs.cmich.edu/~dhavlena/ Building one is an easy weekend project. PLEASE NOTE: A real, Swiss-made Hang Drum is VERY difficult to obtain these days. A ray of hope is on the horizon however-- Pantheon Steel, a maker of beautiful steel drums ("steel pans") is researching and experimenting -- with the intention of producing Hang Drums (under a different name) for sale. Please contact them at pantheonsteel.com and encourage them! They're looking for signs of interest at this time. Thanks. LATER NOTE: 10-30-07 - I just uploaded another video of this instrument in action - - on YouTube at: http://youtube.com/watch?v=6LYgxb5J9SI

Pretty neat. Did you do anything to tune the tank?

Hi Butterface67 & royjipas - Thanks! Tank itself is not tuned in any way but the 8 "tongues" are -- tongues cut and tuned (slooowly) with a hand sabre-saw. Altho it's pretty close to pitch, more fine-tuning is planned on this particular instrument. I should say that I used a NEW, never-been-filled LP tank - highly recommended to eliminate any explosion possibilities! $27 at Home Depot.

Wow, your tank seems to sound even richer (deeper and somewhat more smooth) than the original hang. It's probably not as portable and easy to carry :-) No, honestly, wonderful work!

Made one of these. sounds Great. It was a fun project with outstanding results!!. New tank, 10 Jig blades, and and a few hours later. Playing my Hang\Hank drum! Friends all love it! Great find, Thanks Dennis. Now I can put the 1,200.00 dollars I had saved for a hang into another project. Your great!

Dennis, Great job as always. I can acquire a more saucer like tank here, slightly smaller than the hang but similar in shape. I shall give it a go. You are an inspiration to all us homebuilders of instruments. Best regards, Don in Mexico
