Max runs 3D games. Games have become more profitable than cinema. The makers of Max bought the main cinema software Maya.

I have been using Lightwave since 96, for both games and both History and Discovery Channel documentary work. I also use 3DS Max at work, but only because I have to.

maya 8.5 3dsmax9 lightwave softimage xsi whatever its all pipeline, if you buy one peice of software make it zbrush, you can output meshes via obj and it integrates seamlessly with photoshop, offers you a truly revolutionary scuplting, uvw, painting solution. you could use blender as your 3dstudio app which is free, but the core production tool Is and will be for the considerable future Pixologics Zbrush 3.
